One of the most important thing I learned in school game design is that the video game character much like the characters. They also need a story to go along with them. The first thing you should do is give your main character’s personality. You will also want to decide why they should have certain properties. These two elements will form the core of your character. Next you will want to write down a list of your character flaws’. When I was at game design school, I often get confused on this prospect. One way I found to deal with is to use the vulnerability of people I know as a model. Vulnerability is very important, because they complement your characters and make them look more realistic. If you give your character a physical disability, decide how your character will overcome the disability. Personality quirks are also important in helping to define your character.
Give your characters goals. No need to stay consistent throughout the course of the story of this game, as the motivation is often changed, but there is always the initial motivation that will result in action character from scratch. For example, your character can try to solve something from their past. Or maybe they were running away from someone, or walking toward them. Again, when I was at game design school, this is something I often used by people who I know as a model for.
Creating your character is different. By this I mean make them stand out from others in a special way. This can manifest itself through a special skill or talent that has your character. Maybe your character has supernatural powers, or their lineage may show something special, or maybe they bring terrible curse. A powerful weapon or unusual can also make your character unique.
Decide on your character’s appearance. Here you will want to make some of the characteristics that determine the physical identity of your character. Imagine in detail what your character might look like, including their height, build, weight, hair color and length, eye color, and type of clothes they wear. Decide whether your characters speak in a certain way, perhaps in a way that will determine their level of education or where they are from. Is your character moves in a certain way? Do they have a physical barrier, note them here as well.
Often when I was at game design school, I’ll come up with ideas for characters and then feel frustrated, decided they were not true, that it is to this character or that, or my idea for the story changed and they no longer fit in that context. Game design is a complicated process, and this possibility will happen to you from time to time as well. If so, be sure to hang onto your old ideas, because you never know when they will be useful to others.
