The son of noted stunt choreographer Veeru Devgan, Ajay Devgan made his debut in the Bollywood with the movie Phool Aur Kante. He got the Filmfare Award for Best Debutant. Jigar, in which he starred opposite Karishma Kapoor, was his next blockbuster. He has also experimented with action genre in Platform and Ek Hi Raasta. He paired up with notable filmmaker Harry Baweja to make blockbusters like Dilwale, Suhaag and Vijaypath.

Ishq was his first romantic film after as a series of action films in the Hindi film industry. In the year 1998, he acted in the movie Zakhm, which was directed by Mahesh Bhatt. His acting in this film won him National Best Actor Award and also the Star Screen Award.
